Diver or Chaman in Tin Tazarift in Tassili n'Ajjer in Djanet in Algeria. In fact there are tow interpretation to this frescos: one says it is about divers in water fishing and the archers and people around helping them, the other says that the horizontal men are chamans representing the link bitween this world and other dimensions and the archers are there to protect the ritual. I like too the level of water that erased some of the frescos and let one diver and part of the second diver: this gives an idea about the water level during rain period. I think it could be FP du to the complete scene in the frescos.

  •  Comment @Granada I wanted to write at Info, actually what friend asked me "How many tries did i have ?", he is profesional, i told 1/100, with new shoes 1/500. With Zuiko 50-200 mm + adapter, Single Focus maybe even less. Try it. Your sport shot are more by sharp angle, thats is easy shot. This angle is "worst" for photographer. The Tomb of Hazrat Salim Chishti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a mausoleum. It enshrines the burial place of the Sufi saint Salim Chisti, a descendant of Baba Farid, who lived in a cavern on the ridge at Sikri. Considered one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture in India, the mausoleum was built during the years 1580 and 1581 by Akbar, along with the imperial complex at Fatehpur Sikri near Zenana Rauza.

  • No need for a tripod to a get a HQ shot from a ceiling. I have done it so many times... I'm surprised and disappointed by the support this image is getting. The camera was off-centered, so that the arches on left and right are not symmetrical at all, the cop is a mess and the quality low. Poco a poco (talk) 14:06, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Weak oppose In the top left corner (please see annotation) there is a yellow coloration on the white surface, which indicates a subsequent coloring within a poorly made selection. However, this is only an assumption. Also, the saturation of the image seems too high to me. I would also suggest a square crop in favor of a more balanced composition. Also, I have to partially agree with the opponents above that the FP standard for church interiors is higher than this one. Nevertheless, the subject is great, and with careful reworking it would have a chance of becoming FP. I am very sorry. -- Radomianin (talk) 15:15, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Addendum: If you look at the original version, you can see a more natural coloring. Another indication of subsequent editing, which in my opinion was not done carefully enough. I would like to ask the nominator/editor to place a retouching template with the done work on the file page. Many thanks in advance. Best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 15:33, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you for your reply, Riad Salih. I am sure you have done your best to meet the FP standard. For this, the community thanks you, because every volunteer is needed to keep this project alive. And your work is just as valuable as that of any other volunteer. But participation in this forum thrives on constructive criticism that helps the volunteers maintain the professional standards of the FP project. I too have evolved over the past few years by trying to accept criticism and develop my skills. My suggestion was only meant as an advice to provide with the template the necessary transparency on the file page. If my criticism was perceived as disrespectful, I sincerely apologize. Addendum: This is a renomination. -- A. Öztas 11:13, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be complete at this point: One nomination did not reach the necessary total number of votes and the other was a different version of this picture, whose nomination I had withdrawn after less than a day. Without going any further into the discussion here, I should have included the reference above (as I subsequently did) when I nominated it. I didn't have in mind at the time that the photo had already been here before. -- A. Öztas 11:13, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is no strict rule about it but it is generally the case that we don't renominate a picture that has failed unless significant improvements have been made to it since the previous nomination. My support still stands in this case, but it isn't normally something we would do. Cmao20 (talk) 13:57, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, see this case for example, a few days ago -- Basile Morin (talk) 05:30, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You didn't have in mind that the structure had already been nominated twice? It's surprising. Anyway, too dark in my opinion -- Basile Morin (talk) 05:30, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The brief nomination that I withdrew after less than a day and the subsequent one felt like a single attempt to me and this was over a year ago – and quite a lot has happened since then. So yes, it simply slipped my mind. There's no reason to be surprised by that. It was pointed out, the reference was added, and that should suffice. As for the image, I understand that it might indeed appear a bit too dark. Whilst it can always change, at the moment it's just right for me, whether it's enough for an excellence rating or not. I appreciate your perspective and the time you've taken to review it. -- A. Öztas 16:43, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome to discuss here. "Brief nomination" but still three oppose, one question and one comment during this short time. Thus quite a logical withdrawal, in my opinion. We can of course AGF, but reciprocally, we, reviewers, remember that the two similar nominations failed not so long ago, for assumed fair reasons. As Ikan Kekek rightly said in a similar case "Not voting also counts as a lack of interest". Usually, it is obvious to the nominators that a photo has already been nominated, because they need to add "/2" at the end of the file name to create a new FPC, but here the file page has been renamed twice recently. With still no metadata. Of course, since the voters are not always the same at FPC every month, it can happen that a picture which failed the first time is finally promoted by insisting. But you should also understand, as you wrote after the first nomination "I will nominate the original as FP with the reasonable assumption that it will be rejected anyway", that the picture will struggle to pass, even though several of us reiterate their efforts to evaluate again. -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:14, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Discuss about what? After the first answer from you and me, everything was already said, or am I wrong? Of course, we are welcome to deepen the discussion, precisely because it is a topic that affects many aspects of the FP nomination processes and often offers room for different perspectives. In this context, I would like to address a few points that touch on both the past of previous nominations and the general guidelines for repeat submissions. As I mentioned, the first nomination was over a year ago. This distance in the time frame plays a role in my opinion, as it makes it clear that I did not submit the nomination of the structure out of a constant repetition so that it would, as you wrote, "finally be promoted by insisting". The motivation lies more in the fact that I continued to reflect on the image over time and adapted my own view of it. As a photographer, I often experience such processes; a certain development of my own view of the image. Photography, after all, is a medium through which we capture not just what we see, but what we feel at a given moment. And as those feelings evolve, so too can our interpretations of our own work. This growth is natural and, I believe, valuable to the community's understanding of a work as it evolves through the eyes of its creator. At the same time, I understand that for reviewers like you and others who regularly participate in the discussions, there is a certain habit and reminder value when similar or identical images are up for discussion again. What this has to do with AGF here is beyond me. I'm not as familiar with the practice in this area, I'm only on my fourth photo here. I see your references to a previous nomination as a helpful addition and not a criticism per se. The process of weighing up between a possible repetition and the search for new qualities in an image is essential and is shown in the current case by the different feedback and views. I would also like to note that my decision to quickly withdraw the previous nomination should not be understood as an endorsement of a "logical withdrawal". There were several factors at the time, including personal considerations, that led me to withdraw the nomination. It is true that this first nomination was - albeit briefly - on the table and led to reactions, but the circumstances were more complex than they appear at first glance. In my opinion, such a withdrawal should not be seen as a weakening factor for the quality of the picture itself, but as part of the individual process that each artist has to deal with. Furthermore, I would suggest having a broader discussion about the weighting of nominations that have already failed. Of course, there is no doubt that a clear majority should decide the relevance and quality of an image, but there may be cases where an image changes its relevance and quality over time. This could be due to technical improvements, a change in the community's perspective or simply time showing the work in a new light. Such an approach may well make sense for some FPC nominations, particularly for those images that have failed in the past but could potentially find new appreciation. After all, everything and nothing is set in stone here. With regard to the question about the brightness of the image, I agree that this is a subjective judgement and certainly open to discussion. The incidence of light and the colour scheme reflect the mood that I wanted to capture when taking the photograph and are not just technical parameters for me, but part of the aesthetic that I want to convey. Of course, the comment that the image may be perceived as too dark is justified and a question of personal taste - however, it is precisely this difference between subjective perception and objective quality that often leads to divergent assessments. Light plays a powerful role in shaping the emotional resonance of an image, influencing how viewers perceive and connect with it on a deeper level. By intentionally choosing a darker, more subdued lighting, I aimed to create an atmosphere that goes beyond a straightforward representation of the structure itself. This darkness, though perhaps unconventional, allows subtle textures and contrasts to emerge, lending the image a mysterious quality that invites viewers to look closer and consider the piece in a contemplative way. The interplay between shadows and faint highlights, in my view, captures a sense of introspection and draws attention to the sculptural lines of the structure. While brighter lighting may provide more clarity or detail, this more moody approach aligns with the feeling I experienced when taking the photograph, reflecting a quieter, almost meditative atmosphere. Shadows add depth and a sense of timelessness to the scene, suggesting that the image captures not just a single moment but a feeling that could exist outside of time. This play of light and shadow is a deliberate choice, one intended to evoke curiosity and to invite viewers into the scene, allowing them to experience the piece not merely as an architectural object but as a structure with an almost enigmatic presence. At least that's how I feel about this one. In the end, I understand that every image will resonate differently with each person who views it, and I fully respect the diverse perspectives within this community. The beauty of these discussions lies in their ability to reveal new interpretations and insights, both for the artist and for those who critique the work. I look forward to read more of your perspectives in other discussions as well, as these exchanges are invaluable not only for our individual growth but also for enriching the shared vision of what we seek to highlight here. -- A. I have found one error. I created a new Category:Pelecaniformes of the Cook Islands and placed it Category:Pelecaniformes by country. I did not categorize it under Category:Birds of the Cook Islands. Naughty me. I have now done so. I do wonder why the category structure places the Cook Islands under New Zealand. Charlesjsharp (talk) 14:46, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Now I am really confused. I created Category:Insects of the Cook Islands for this image. You have deleted this category and replaced it with Category:Cook Islands. How is this better? There are 170+ different Category:insects by country. Why does the Cook Islands not get one? Charlesjsharp (talk) 22:08, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You expect me to help you? Oh really? --A.Savin 08:06, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree that it's a bit soft. It is maybe a little bit of motion blur. I nominated it because I think the composition outweighs that. I disagree that it's overexposed though. Bright light shining through a large arch window will appear white to the naked eye. I think this photo would be much less interesting if you reduced the highlights. Book cover of La vuelta de Martín Fierro por José Hernández
@Basile Morin: The stamp wasn't original made by Jose Hernandez, was stamped by a library as catalog number, and I tried to smooth out wrinkles that ruined the material --Ezarateesteban 10:57, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Only 1,772 × 2,819 pixels, the resolution is quite low, considering this section aims to select the finest pictures of the website. The subject itself is not spectacular. I believe there are a lot of similar covers on Commons in better conservation state. About the restoration, it has gone too far in my opinion, distorting the original document a little too much (even though the weird line has now been removed) -- Basile Morin (talk) 12:03, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Large blue wood bee on a marigold flower
  • I can tell you that, even with no wind, bumble bees are extraordinarily difficult to capture like this. The focus-stacking software actually compensates for the flower moving in the wind or the photographer moving. The skill here is in capturing a moment when the bee was still. Charlesjsharp (talk) 12:29, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Support I should say the light spot ads a touch of magic to the scene --Wolfgang Moroder (talk) 18:25, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support: per above --The Cosmonaut (talk) 00:33, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Neutral: The patch of sunlight brings the necessary asymmetry to the photo --Superbass (talk) 07:22, 7 November 2024 (UTC) changed to neutral after uploading new version --Superbass (talk) 09:31, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Question Somehow the asymmetric left/right crop bothers me because the church is quite symmetric. It’s clear that you do not want to crop the candelabrum at the right. Any chance to add a little more space at the left to achieve symmetry? Just asking, – Aristeas (talk) 10:03, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment The sunspot is fine for me, but I fully agree with Aristeas's point. This is an image that demands symmetry and it just isn't satisfying at the moment. Cmao20 (talk) 02:30, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    •  Comment Thanks Aristeas and Cmao20 for the suggestion. I tried to give a little more space at left to achieve symmetry. Please take a look. Greetings --Dirtsc (talk) 17:32, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      •  Comment Personally, I find this a little unfortunate because a chandelier is now cut off on the left and disturbs the picture. Certainly a question of taste and a consideration that is debatable. But I don't know if it's a good idea to change the picture after it's already been voted on - my pro referred to the version that was put to the vote at the time. I still like the picture but changed to neutral --Superbass (talk) 09:18, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
        •  CommentSuperbass describes exactly my problems. Now there is a cutoff at left and (and this is my problem I can't solve) I uploaded a new version in the middle of this voting. How can we handle this? How was this handled with other images? Switch back to the previous version? Greetings --Dirtsc (talk) 10:05, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
          •  CommentI'm not that experienced either, but here is an example of a vote with an alternative version that was added. --Superbass (talk) 19:50, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
            •  Comment The best way to proceed depends on the importance of the changes to the image.
              1. If one changes an image during the process of voting and the changes are very minor and uncontroversial (e.g., some dust spots have been fixed), we usually add a simple comment to the nomination saying that this or that has been fixed.
              2. If the changes are of intermediate importance, e.g. when the crop has been changed a little bit (like in this example) or when the exposure has been changed to a small degree, we usually add a comment and ping all previous voters to inform them about the change (the {{Ping}} template is useful for that purpose).
              3. If the changes are more important, e.g. when there has been a big change of the crop or a new development from the raw image file, or when one wants to propose a different exposure from the same photo session, it is advisable to upload that new version as a new file (under a new filename) and to add it to the nomination as an ‘Alternative’ image (see the “Formal things” box at the head of this page).
              4. If one wants to propose a completely different photo (even of the same subject), a separate nomination is necesssary.
            Hope this helps, – Aristeas (talk) 16:03, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. So I'd suggest, @Dirtsc uses the version he/she prefers and briefly notifies those who voted while another version was visible. So far, no one seems to be taking the change as an opportunity to vote pro instead of con or vice versa. Superbass (talk) 17:02, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support --MZaplotnik(talk) 17:04, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Cmao20 (talk) 18:56, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Sorry, my question about the possibility to improve the symmetry was not meant to spoil the nomination; it was just a question or suggestion. Personally I would still be happier about this photo of a very symmetric interior if the photo was completely symmetric, too (by the way, this is not my hobby horse, but a common idea often expressed on this page). But I agree that the photo is also attractive as it is, especially, as Moroder has rightly emphasized, the light spot brings some magic into the scene. – Aristeas (talk) 16:08, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Per Ermell, the sun spot doesn't bring magic to this scene in my opinion. (and by the way, horizontal PC would be welcome, horizontal lines aren't parallel and I think they should in a symetric composition) --Benji 22:46, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I really like that picture, Poco a poco. And I think it is sufficiently different from your other FP in light, time of day, and angle to be featured too. Would you consider nominating it? Perhaps some selective denoising first. Edit: and anti-aliaising in the water, then I think it'd be ready for FP. Cmao20 (talk) 16:12, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've read that it can kill other fishes and even themselves but if you ask me about the impact on humans, I cannot tell you. This fish is in the menu of countries like Singapore and I've read concerns about that (in the case the toxin is generated just prior to the dwath of the fish) but I've no details. The rocky shores of the second Zagedan lake in a mountain cirque.
This is how the bare sunlight, obscured by fog and cloud, looks to the naked eye. The highlights, tone mapping and colors look natural to me. In fact, I suspect the colors might be a little oversaturated with this profile. The sky turned white, but I just checked and there is nothing to recover there, a big bright sunspot under fog covering most of the sky and only some irregular circular side patterns on the left, seemingly not coming from any cloud structure. It’s just dense, shadeless, formless cloud fog lit with diffuse sunlight in the valley behind the wall, with nothing to recover or reveal. --Argenberg (talk) 19:00, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Thank you Cmao20 for cross-referencing it to another entry. What I like about this picture is its mood and contemplative atmosphere. The other one is flashy, good for a quick glance or two. But this one is different and seems to captivate more if you take time. But it only works in dim environments. I looked at it again tonight, when everything around was dark and silent, and it again took me back to that late evening, lonely glacial cirque, with the sun fading and everything around rapidly getting darker and colder. With all the rocks and sediments of ancient geology, piled and scattered, huge and small, exposed and submerged, testimony to eons of erosion, weathering and terraforming, and the evening lake with its reflections on the surface, and the silence. I actually prefer this to the other for its soothing, meditative effect. Eye candy is one thing, soul is another. Maybe it's like introversion vs. extrospection. --Argenberg (talk) 19:00, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Boat at sunset on Lake Lesina
  • Gallery: Commons:Featured pictures/Natural phenomena#Reflections
  •  Info Sunsets are always beautiful to look at, so we at FPC are rightly very selective when it comes to promoting such images. But this candidate with a boat on Lake Lesina in Italy appealed to me immediately. So I'll give it a try and look forward to your feedback. One fly in the ointment is the lack of Exif data. This may simply be an editing error, as the author's latest uploads show a Canon EOS 5D Mark III as the camera used.
I think the choice of the current gallery is fine. But if the community thinks …/Natural phenomena#Sun or …/Water transport#Boats fits better, of course it will be changed. Created and uploaded by Nella Laquintana, nominated by -- Radomianin (talk) 12:50, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Great interplay of purple, red and orange tones, the reflection is a particularly nice feature of the scene in combination with the balanced composition. Personally, I find the slight noise in the upper part of the image acceptable. -- Radomianin (talk) 12:50, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 13:01, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Seems a great example of her creative style. She was using Canon EOS 5D Mark III with EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM in 2017. Charlesjsharp (talk) 13:52, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Stunning. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 14:22, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support Amazing light and awesome reflection. --Rbrechko (talk) 15:21, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Yes, this is a breathtaking photo! There is no doubt about this. What is not understandable is the ripple of the boat's shadow on a completely calm water surface. At the very least, most of the clouds reflected to the right and left of the boat should also be rippled, but from what you can see the ripples are really too light and in my opinion they have a discordant angle compared to those visible on the boat. Try to zoom-in (getting closer) to the shadow produced by the boat to understand that the sea ripples inexplicably stop on the surface of the lake. Another aspect not to be overlooked is the sunlight which on the boat is too intense to be at sunset. It produces shadows that unquestionably indicate the origin of the natural light coming from the right, in fact the front part of the ship is also partially illuminated. The sunset, however, is clearly in front of us, yet at the back of the boat we can see a shadow that could be a rope or a stake to possibly anchor another boat. But on the right you can see the mirror of the free and serene Lesina's lake. There is no clear indication regarding the general indications and EXIF data present. The only clue about the photo (or maybe the fusion of two photos) which was taken in 2017. I am ready to change my mind and support the photo if the author or anyone else can counter my assumptions. --Terragio67 (talk) 15:36, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Many thanks to Terragio67, I'm afraid you're right. I must have missed it during the first review. I had some doubts, but I was still unsure and decided in favor of the nomination. To be on the safe side, I will withdraw the nomination. After all, what good is it if an undisclosed manipulation later results in a delisting, which means trouble and extra work for all of us. Thank you again for your attention and best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 16:27, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I strongly believe that withdrawing the image is a wise decision. I am truly sorry to see that these elaborate compositions serve to deceive judges in photography competitions. Unfortunately today we try to amaze others even more and more dishonestly, also due to powerful generative AI tools... I greet you dearly, and I wish you a good weekend. Terragio67 (talk) 16:39, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you for your words and wishes, Terragio67. It was very thoughtful of you to respond so quickly. I am usually very picky when it comes to checking images. But fortunately four eyes are always better than two. Your comment saved us a lot of unnecessary work at FPC. It's just a shame that the WLE jury was so badly misled. Wishing you a relaxing weekend, too. Best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 16:57, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am really very sorry that you thought of an AI manipulation. I don't know where to start and I don't care at all. I love photography and if I uploaded these photos it is only to give a contribution to my land. This is a photo of a very particular place, Lake Lesina is separated from the sea by a thin strip of land, so at dawn and dusk, exceptional light conditions are often created and, when there is no wind, the lake becomes a perfect mirror, moved only by the slight movement of the boats. I uploaded other photos of this place on Wiki, always taken with the same reflex, Canon Eos 5D Mark III and with an EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, I think the exif data are: 55mm - ƒ/8 - 1/200s - ISO 100. I hope I have answered your doubts, in any case I thank you for the attention you have given to my photos. Nella Laquintana (talk) 21:20, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you very much for your message, Nella Laquintana. Your photos are a great and valuable contribution to Commons and Wikipedia. However, since Commons is the media archive for all language versions of Wikipedia, and there is a requirement for fidelity and transparency, major retouching that does not accurately reflect reality must be openly labeled on the file page with the template {{Retouched picture}}. This is often forgotten by new contributors and is not a problem, but it is a requirement for experienced Commons photographers. Since the FPC forum is used to discuss the very best photos, such things are very important. Especially since there have been a number of recent discoveries that have led to the revocation of the FP status. Terragio67 discovered that the image was probably a composition of two photos. That's why I withdrew the nomination. This is not a drama and it's all about open and transparent communication. We just want to help. The community would be very happy if you would continue to contribute your wonderful images to Commons, as they add to the diversity for which we are very grateful. I hope I was able to give you a little glimpse behind the scenes, and I personally look forward to seeing more great images that we can nominate at FPC. Best regards and all the best, -- Radomianin (talk) 23:40, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you for the kind tone of your reply, I really appreciated it, but it seems I have not been able to eliminate your doubts. I have never contributed to Wikipedia and Commons before and I even had difficulty uploading photos, but as in all contests, the jury's decision is final, right or wrong. However, I would like to advise you, for the future, not to directly involve the authors in these discussions, because terms such as "deception" and "dishonesty" can greatly hurt the feelings of those who read, even if said in general and not directed personally, when instead you simply wanted to give a photo to the community, uploading it (among other things) in a very high definition, deception-proof. Thank you for your time. Best regards. Nella Laquintana (talk) 10:53, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Nella Laquintana: Thank you for your reply, which I appreciate very much. However, I would like to respectfully disagree with you that we have not personally accused you of deliberate deception or dishonesty. Nor do we doubt your abilities or good intentions, quite the opposite. Mine and Terragio67's comments were an expression of opinion, not directed at you. If that impression was given, we apologise. The withdrawal of the nomination on the FPC is in part due to the rules that require retouching work to be labelled, as can be read here. Unfortunately, the indications point to retouching. However, I would like to emphasise that the community is very happy to have talented photographers like you in our midst. But the rules apply to all participants. I think I have said everything important at this point. Best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 11:30, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Nella Laquintana: I fully agree with Radomianin's words. The allegations of dishonesty were aimed at a series of events that recently occurred with the removal of Featured Picture status from some previous photos. Please don't take personally an "OPPOSE" to a single photo of you although I understand that in this specific case it hurts deeply in the way it happened. This doesn't changes my respect for you as a photographer leader on the Italian Wikimedia. Kind regards. --Terragio67 (talk) 21:05, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Terragio67 for your kind reply. I noticed that you live in Italy, I would like to invite you to give yourself a gift: if you come to Puglia, go to Lesina at dawn or dusk. The town is small and does not offer much, but it overlooks the lake, with a low wall that allows you to immediately see the boats in deep water a few meters from the shore. If everything is clear, you will see the sky change color many times in a few minutes, giving you a beautiful show. But if there is a bit of fog, with some light clouds and you are lucky enough not to find wind, the show will be unforgettable and a simple cell phone or a compact camera will be enough to take spectacular photos, without needing to glue skies or anything else. With great honesty, I am not telling you this to plead my case, I love my photos too much to have to justify myself and, probably, I will have removed from above the boat some disturbing element that contrasted with my aesthetic sense, so I should have declared it, but I did not know. However, I would personally like to introduce you to this magical place, about 90 km from my home, and to make you change your mind about your observations, beyond the competition of the contest.
Thank you so much for your time and for the attention you have dedicated to my photo. Best regards and ... see you soon in Puglia! Nella Laquintana (talk) 07:01, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment I have changed the gallery link from Other objects in landscapes to Natural#Netherlands because most similar photos are on the “Natural” gallery pages. Your description (“horizontal play of lines behind the sea wall at Paesens with a view of the Wadden, a unique tidal area”) confirms that this is a photo of the landscape/nature. Montanaia Valley in the Parco naturale delle Dolomiti Friulane
  •  Comment Just a nerdy note regarding the resolution: Some camera sensors deliver some more pixels than officially supported by the manufacturer. These extra pixels at the margins of the sensor are cut off by the cameras when creating a JPEG image, but they are saved into the raw image files; normally we still do not seem them because most raw converters just cut them off, too, probably because some of these extra pixels are often faulty. If one opens a raw image file from the camera used here (α7R IV) with RawTherapee, some of the extra pixels are retained and we get an image of 9,560 × 6,368 pixels. This means that all pixels in this photo (9,557 × 6,336 pixels) could indeed come straight from a simple single shot. Of course the Exif data state that the photo was developed with “Adobe Photoshop 25.9 (Windows)”, i.e. probably with Adobe Camera RAW (ACR), and ACR cuts the raw images from the α7R IV always to the nominal 9504 × 6336 pixels. But it is possible that the raw image was first developed with another raw converter (like RawTherapee) and only then edited with Photoshop … That’s the theory. Of course it seems more likely that the photographer made some kind of projection/perspective correction and streched the image slightly during that process; this would also explain the extra pixels and the image would still be authentic. – Aristeas (talk) 16:56, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The same applies also to other camera bodies, with a varying amount of extra pixels. Checking e.g. a CR2 file from the Canon EOS 5D IV, RawTherapee shows me 6732 × 4492 pixels – a little bit more than the official 6720 × 4480 pixels. So if one ever finds oneself in the situation that “just a few pixels” are missing at a border to complete the composition, it’s worth to give it a try and to open the raw image with RawTherapee … ;–) End of digression, sorry. – Aristeas (talk) 11:57, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Question The nomination indicates the name Scosse as uploader, but according to the file page, the uploader is Civvì. And because this last version is significantly different from the original one, with heavy processing, lifted shadows and oversaturated colors, I wonder if these modifications have been approved by the photographer. This message suggests that Scosse is not at the initiative of the FP nomination -- Basile Morin (talk) 14:13, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose per Basile Morin, and also wonder where the high resolution version of the image came from. If it was not uploaded by or with the consent of the original photographer then this is a copyright violation - if the photographer has chosen only to release the 6megapixel version then we don't have the right to upload a larger version that wasn't explicitly released under a Creative Commons license over the top Cmao20 (talk) 15:24, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi all, during the first candidature as QI the original version of the picture was considered too small so I asked the author if they were willing to upload a larger version of the picture, instead of uploading it they sent it me via email and I uploaded it. Maybe I should forward this email exchange to VRTS? --Civvì (talk) 15:38, 15 November 2024 (UTC) Update, I just forwarded the emails to VRTS. --Civvì (talk) 15:49, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment Thanks for the clarification about the image source. The lens flares and dust spot are still a problem in my view, but more importantly, which person did manage the post-treatment here, Scosse or Civvì? Scosse could have sent the same image in larger size as requested, and Civvì handled the processing before uploading it? In any case the correct name of the uploader should be updated on this nomination -- Basile Morin (talk) 22:37, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The author uploaded a new version with reduced flares. --Civvì (talk) 17:34, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Thanks for the notification and attempt to improve, but sorry to say the correction is not well handled in my opinion. First, the dust spot and lens flares are still there (I will add image notes to specify the exact locations), then the dark spot added to reduce the white spot in the center creates artificial shadows on the rocks. Moreover, in this last version, the contrasts have been reduced, or the clarity increased, compared to the original, it's really blueish in the background and at the top of the foreground -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:35, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Small stained glass window from Sainte-Chapelle (King). Paris
  •  Oppose I am not a fan of stained glass photographed like this. The contrast and saturation has been pumped up too high so that the colours of the glass are exaggerated, and the details around the window are completely black. It doesn't look natural. I agree that many of the stained glass photos in the gallery have similar processing, but I don't think they should be FP either. This to me is an example of it being done right. Cmao20 (talk) 01:46, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Unfortunately an old image (2012) taken from an old camera (2008) with low resolution, no tripod, high ISO, and narrow DoF -- Basile Morin (talk) 08:03, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    •  Comment Dear Basile Morin, you have rated when, by what and under what conditions the photo was taken, but not any word about the image itself. Having read "Featured picture", I assumed that the pictures are rated here. Am I wrong? -- Ввласенко (talk) 09:41, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose And I'd like to add that "low resolution", "high ISO" and "narrow depth of field" directly concern the technical aspects of "the image itself", as you request. This photo was perhaps a fair candidate in 2012, but much less in 2024. And even at that time, a tripod would have helped to increase the quality. The edges are slightly blurry, especially at the top and at the left. The crop is very tight all around. Overall, it is a standard photo of stained glass, not an exceptional one, in my opinion -- Basile Morin (talk) 22:21, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Underexposed Yes, though the picture looks interesting -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:21, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's impossible to agree with the claim that this image is underexposed. This is clearly proven by the excellent visibility of every detail on the head louse's body - its tiny hairs, complex body texture, and even various color shades. The dark, almost black background is not an exposure error, but rather serves to highlight the main subject more clearly. The image's tonality is well balanced - we can clearly see details in both lighter and darker areas, confirming that the exposure is not incorrect. This lighting choice is intentional here, designed to give the image a slightly dramatic effect. If the picture were truly underexposed, we wouldn't be able to see such fine details and color tones that are now clearly visible. Janeklass (talk) 04:19, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disagree. You will see more details if the photo is better exposed. Currently the contrasts are very hard to distinguish, especially at thumbnail size.
Note that you can also see a lot of details here, although the photo is underexposed too. And that one was properly fixed.
Hard to hear that "it's impossible to agree with the claim that this image is underexposed" while the two first reviewers here both find the image too dark :-) Then above you write "This lighting choice is intentional here, designed to give the image a slightly dramatic effect" (by the way, I don't understand this dramatic intention. It's just a close-up of an animal, no special background / context). Sorry, clear light problem for me, in state -- Basile Morin (talk) 04:45, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have responded to the criticism and want the evaluators to know that the lighting choice here is clearly intentional. How you choose to evaluate it is up to you. Janeklass (talk) 04:56, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment It is too dark for my eyes. Charlesjsharp (talk) 09:58, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support It is a very fascinating image. The darkness is not a problem, as the object is clearly seen, and that seems more like a creative choice on this dark creature. I am thinking that maybe a square format would be better for this image... but I'm not sure. Kruusamägi (talk) 13:24, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support --Yann (talk) 13:40, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Sorry. I agree that there are dark photographs which do not tolerate an increasure of the exposure – reproductions of dark paintings, some gloomy atmospheric landcape photographs, low-key photos etc. However I fail to see why this would apply to this photo, despite of the explanations. I have played a bit with this JPEG file and can confirm that a careful increase of the brightness works very well when at the same time the light parts are dialed down a bit. If you have a raw image or a 16 bit TIFF file, this should work even better. Of course you have all right to keep your photo as you think it should be (so keep it!), but I cannot support it here. Sorry again, – Aristeas (talk) 10:25, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned before, this solution was intentional. I did try making changes but wasn't satisfied with the result. I can see that opinions are divided on this one - and I suppose not everyone has to like the picture. It's clear that I won't get much support for this image, but that's okay. I'm already looking forward to when this period ends and I can submit my next works 🙂 Janeklass (talk) 13:28, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, Paris.
  • Thanks for the correction of the verticals. About the horizontal lines, I'm sorry to disagree, after having taken the time to listen the arguments (Aristeas's in particular) and looking at maps, I believe that such a distance of the camera associated to such a minor angle (to the right) cannot realistically justify a strong horizontal inclination. This could be calculable geometrically :-)
I think this aspect is correct. Top AND bottom -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:00, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Basile, thank you very much for your additional effort and for your edited version! My statement (below) was mostly about the obvious misalignment between the axes of the church and the balcony. You are right that this does not necessarily imply the strength of the horizontal inclination and hence of the differences of the height e.g. of the two horses or of the two minor domes. There must be some difference, and it should indeed be possible to calculate it, but this exceeds my possibilites. So it is quite possible that these differences could/should be smaller and more like in your edited version – which indeed looks very appealing. I would like to ask you to upload your edited version as a derivative file to Commons; I guess that many people would appreciate your version. Best, – Aristeas (talk) 16:14, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you for your efforts with this difficult object. If I'm honest, I like Basile's version the best. In this version the cross looks a bit crooked. Fresco of Apollon by Francesco Zugno in the foyer of the Teatro Grande in Brescia
Comment I'm glad you say that, this is trompe-l'œil and the painter Francesco Battaglioli did a perfect job because the ceiling is flat. The black spots on the right are floodlights I could not hide.--Wolfgang Moroder (talk) 06:09, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Good point :-) Sorry, I don't read Italian (for the title) though I think the word Trompe-l'œil is missing there. Still, there is "flat" and "flat", and the camera doesn't seem in the axis. The bottom and the sides are not symmetrical. To be honest, at first sight my eyes were attracted by the distracting black shape. That part could be cropped out. The two columns at the bottom are showing the same perspective, as if the picture was taken from the right -- Basile Morin (talk) 06:33, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm terribly sorry, I was tromped, the right part is missing. Trompe-l'oeil is in the English description, the other is just the filename. By the way I was going to delete my comment. You can see it in the other fotos of the painting.--Wolfgang Moroder (talk) 06:35, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
