Advice on transferring larger files to Commons

[edit]

Hi! I hope you have a good time :).

I need advice on how to upload larger files to Commons via URL as batch. URL2Commons has limitations on the number of uploads at once and in file size per file (I guess it's 100 MiB because of the old file size limit). Downloading and reuploading of several Terabytes takes a lot of time 😴. Thanks and kind regards :) --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 10:39, 15 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @PantheraLeo1359531 Hope you're well as well ;)
I'd recommend using asking for the domain(s) to be whitelisted at MediaWiki:Copyupload-allowed-domains, that way you do not have to download and re-upload. Then, use OpenRefine (or other batch uploading tools) to do the upload by URL: Commons:Upload tools#Uploading by URL
Let me know if that works for you. If not, I can suggest other alternatives. Cheers :) -- DaxServer (talk) 10:57, 15 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I can give it a try :D --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 13:53, 15 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I looked deeper into the OpenRefine thing, and I just don't understand ist D:. I think I will leave a mark at Commons:Batch uploading, regards :) --18:17, 22 August 2025 (UTC) PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 18:17, 22 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
No worries.. I can help with that if you’d like to get on with it. I’m pretty sure you’ll love it once you get used to it. Let me know;) @PantheraLeo1359531 DaxServerOnMobile (talk) 19:36, 22 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks :). When I have some more free time, I can come back :D. I love the idea, but it's really a bit complicated sometimes :). Greetings --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 19:51, 22 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I added also the NAIP imagery to the Commons:Batch uploading, maybe someone eager processes it. It may cover more than 100 TBs in size, but is also very valuable as it covers large areas of the US :) --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 10:19, 27 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Whoa, that's almost 1/7th of the current size of Commons 😵‍💫 -- DaxServer (talk) 16:37, 28 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
It's insane, right? But it's also a very large percentage of the US American area so it's basically half of North America :) --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 08:14, 8 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I tested the OpenRefine software some days ago, and when I want to log in to Commons via OpenRefine, the attempt fails, but I also get an Email to enter a code, but there is no input field. Do you have experience with similar cases? Greetings --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 08:31, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@PantheraLeo1359531 Recently, a 2FA code has been enforced it seems and now we will have to use either a Special:BotPasswords or a OAuth 1.0 consumer. Also, you have to use the latest version of OpenRefine (3.9.5) and Commons extension (0.1.15) because of another recent enforcement. Try out one of the methods and you should be able to login. -- DaxServer (talk) 13:45, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ah thanks, yes, that was the main issue. I will try it out :) --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 19:06, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I tried it with hosting by Wikimedia's own platform (PAWS) I think, but the problem is that the versions are outdated and I was not able to set up by my own, too complicated :( --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 09:11, 18 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
What a bummer!! Looks like they're much behind the updates. I've increased the priority for the tracked tasks. -- DaxServer (talk) 11:02, 18 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Donald Judge uploads

[edit]

Thank you for uploading files from Donald Judge, but as you can see e.g. here, you haven't added any relevant categories and the files are unreachable now because of it. (They are only in this 50K+ files cat, which is unusable. Regards Enaecard (talk) 09:02, 27 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, better to communicate with me (that above was my secondary account). — Draceane talkcontrib. 09:03, 27 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Draceane Thanks for the heads up. I unfortunately am out of depth with the categories here. Usually, I'd add the check categories template, seems like I missed them here. I can put template, if you think it'd help. -- DaxServer (talk) 16:37, 28 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Uncat template would be helpful at least. Or if you just provide some temporary category for these uploads (e.g. filter your uploads / Donald Judge – I guess PetScan would do a great work there). Then I would go through and can do some basic cat sorting. — Draceane talkcontrib. 20:51, 28 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'll do that over the weekend and ping you once it's done. -- DaxServer (talk) 12:48, 29 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello DaxServer, this type of errors should be corrected, otherwise the Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls will be full again. Regards. -- ato (talk) 20:07, 8 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2024 voting is open!

[edit]
2023 Picture of the Year: Incense plays an important role in Vietnamese life. It is considered as a sacred bridge to connect the visible life of human beings and the world of heaven, earth, and gods. Photo taken in Quang Phu Cau village, on the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam. In this picture, incense sticks are being set out to dry, after being dipped in the incense solution.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2024 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
